At What Age Did You Begin Washing Your Own Clothes

I guess I grew up pretty spoiled. I didn't start washing my own laundry until I was in college, so I began doing it at 18 (I'm 21 now) but there were some weekends I still didn't have to wash them. I'd bring them home when I came home and someone at my house would throw them in the wash for me. I never wanted to wash my clothes here because we had a very tempermental washing machine that didn't always work right and if you did one thing the wrong way it would overflow. We got a new machine several months ago so tonight was my first night I'm washing my own laundry here at home. I'm hoping that when I go downstairs to get my clothes everything went how it was supposed to go. What age did you start doing your own laundry? Did anyone make you do it when you reached a certain age or was it something that you just decided to do yourself?

My mother worked so the kids started doing that type of thing early on. I can't even remember at what age. My children started "helping" with their laundry at about 7 and was doing their own by about 9yrs. [cjgrooms]

in all seriousness i didnt start till i moved out on my own. my mother took all the cloths to a laundrymat when i was young and then when i was older i actually did get to do my own laundry...when i moved out and got a place of my own. but then i had to move back and it went back to my mom, then eventually my dad decided that only he was capable of using the washer and dryer that he had bought and so i no longer able to do my own cloths and since i dont drive i had no choice to let him do my laundry. of course now i live on my own again and im back to doing my own laundry again. [Palmerhusky]

Well my mother still washes everyone's clothes including myself. She goes to a laundromat to wash the clothes and there are times that I accompany her. But I learned how to wash clothes when I was in high school. My mother was pregnant and she couldn't wash all those clothes by herself so I was the one that had to go and wash everyone's clothes and I took my little sister along. She didn't really helped much to tell you the truth but I was doing that for all the nine months that she was pregnant. She would go like once in a while. But now she is back to washing the clothes herself and I at least got to learn how to wash clothes. [ayumitakashi]

I was born into a large family. There were 7 of us kids. So I actually started helping my mum do the family laundry when I was 10 years old. We only had a wood fired copper at the time. It wasnt until a few years later we actually had power connected. [Goodie123]

hello highflyingxangel At what age did you begin washing your own clothes? i was probably nineteen or even twenty years old when i started washing and taking care of my own clothes. the whole time that i lived at home with my Mom and Dad, my Mom washed everybody's clothing that lived in the house at the time. lol she kept busy just doing that. and i always do my laundry during the day time versus the night time, becuase my washer and dryer are located downstairs in the garage and i usually do not go down there much by myself after dark. lol i am a scardie cat. lol so i guess i had it made when i was growing up as well as far as Mom doing all of my laundry for me. have a beautiful evening. I began washing my own clothes at 14 .Because my school was far away from home, and i can only back home once a month,so I have to do the job myself. Now I am 24 ,settled with my mother, and she always wanna give me a hand,I am very appreciate her ,when I have spare time,I do some cooking pay back her [icefreeman]

I start washing my own clothes when i get marriedlolcertainly i married young..and able to learn how to wash it..im lucky when im still young since somebody had to wash it for us..although i like to learn but got no time for it since i helped my mom in the store during saturdays and sundays thas why we had somebody to work or wash for that particular chores..sad [vanities]

you may not believe this but i started washing most of our clothes (not just mine) at the age of six! my late uncle(a soldier) always thought me on all these washing clothes thing. i never thought of it as a task but a play coz of those floating bubbles. and i never regret it coz it helps me a lot at times when i have to do things on my own. [drakesuyat]

I think I was maybe around 10 or so when I started helping with washing laundry. But I was about 12 when I did it myself. I reas slighly forced to but I'm doing it more now because it's easier for me to do laundry without waiting for it. [k1tten]

I have been washing my own clothes since I was about 12. The reason for this is because I have always been picky on how my clothes are washed or folded. I realized I will just do it myself and I have done that ever since. [k101707]

Don't remember age, just remember always having to help mom do it. But my little GD, age 2, LOVES helping with the laundry and sweeping the floors and dusting and putting things away! She does it on her own - no telling from anyone! I keep telling my son to take advantage of it while he can! In the end, she'll be self supportive and in the meantime, you'll have some fantastic quality time with her and some wonderful hilarious memories! [coffeebreak]

I think it was 15 when i has began to wash my own clothes, because at that time i had went to a new school.I had to live and study there.I could go home each month a time [beth214]

My wife and I each have our own washers. Hers is in the house, and mine is in the Honeyhouse. She washes my clothes in the house, and I use the washer in the Honeyhouse for washing honey strainers, and aprons. Actually I've never washed my own clothes. My mother washed mine until I was 21 and then my wife washed my clothes. [barehugs]

I didn't start doing my own laundry until I was married at age 21. Before then, even when I was in college, I brought my clothes home and my mother did them. I did "help" do laundry when I was in high school, but usually just the sheets and towels. I think my mother didn't trust me to do the other things. [kenzie45230]

i started staying in boarding school at very early age (10yrs) so usdually the laundry was done the boarding launderier but as i grew older.perhaps 15-16yrs i started doing things on my own esp when i would go home for vacation.I enjoy washing and i never liked anybody washing my clothes but today im 28 and with my work i cant help but relieve when somebody does my laundry [walnutbrownie]

happy If my memory serves me right, I started washing my own clothes when I was 8 years old. Yes, too young. I did not do it everyday. But like once or twice a week during weekends. I used to observe my mom washed our clothes manually. We had no washing machine yet at that time. My mom would teach me how to wash clothes. When I knew I can do it on my own I started to try it all by myself; just my clothes. I received lots of praises from my parents and I was happy. [toni_nakama]

I began to washed my clothes at 9.My teacher told us to do that and I followed her words because I'm a persuasible child. Now I believe that having a good life habit is really a good attitude.I benefited much from it. [bluewhitevalen]

I learned to wash clothes at an early age.My mom got sickly after she had her hysterectomy so i had to do the things she suppose to do.I had to do all the chores including laundry.I had to wash all our clothes, from my parents, my brothers and mine. There were times that instead of playing i had to do the laundry until i grew up and went to college i would not contented anymore if i don't wash my clothes by myself.I don't trust other people to wash my them.I am proud to say i am a good washer.Clothes are totally clean when i wash them because i make sure i get rid of all the dirt.I don't use any machines.I used by my hands because before, washing machines was not yet introduce in our country. [giePortlandOR_08]

i did my own laundry when i am about 10 years old i think... my mum teaches me how to use the washing machine and i learn it pretty quickly... i never have any problem using the machine... it is quite simple and straight forward for me... so there is no problem for me to do my own laundry... take care and have a nice day... [lingli_78]

i started to wash my own clothes at the age of 12. my mom taught me to do it. happy posting!! :) [blueberry053178]

err.. i think i started washing my clothes when im still in grade 4 or 5.. im the ones who wash my undies.. :D when im in highschool.. i started washing my own clothes.. my mother wasnt around for us for being outside the country and my father got to work.. we only had our relatives living beside us.. so, i have no choice.. :D and talking bout laundry, i think i need to do that right now.! :P [killerpinx]

Hi highflying, I will be put in a wall of shame very quick. I also didnot do my own laundry. I hired someone to do all the laundry. But i do ocassionaly make my own bed. lol [hcpoirot]

I don't wash my clothes! My mom wouldn't let me because she thinks that i can't really make it. Our maid is away right now because she's in the province so my mom's the one who make the laundry. Right now I'm starting to learn household chores. I'm 16 and I think it's time to be a little independent :D [cyrinmalimata]

This is embarassing. Here at home we have maids who do our laundry for us. So the first time I washed my own clothes was when I lived in the United States for several months. I was 22 then and my cousin had to teach me how to operate the washing machine. Now at least I know how to do it. [wisedragon]

I think I was about fifteen. I had a younger sister that loved to go through my clothes. SO I would try to get my laundry done that way she wouldnt go through it. Did it really work? No because shed still go and help herself to whatever she wanted. [sophiasmom911]

I start doing my own laundry at high school I think, or college, I don't remember, probably at college. But I do them when our live in house maid is off work or had to go home to her village due to annual celebration. Which were only for a week or so. I'm married with one daughter now, and I have a live in maid, she does the laundry. [ucancallmedissy]

I think I am lazy. I seldom wash my clothes by myself. It's not so necessary as we have a washing machine at home. It can wash everything. I think it's cleaner than I wash by my hands. I love China [youless]

I think it was when i waqs in middle school. i always hated it thought because my mother would buy the powder washing stuff and when i was done washing the powder would still be stuck to my cothes LMAO.Now i stil do my own laundry no i do not havew thoes problems anymore LOL. [ImMyOwnDesign]

I grew up on a Farm in S.d in the thirties and I learned alongside my mom how to wash clothes and use a wash board and boiler oh my not fun then we got electricity and mom had an electric washer with a wringer, finally a modern one when I was almost twenty. now days we have it made no wash boards, no boiling clothes. we dump them in'the washer and then in the dryer and we are done.people do not realize how difficult it was to wash clothes back in the pre world war two days. I am a senior citizen and I do appreciate how easy it is now to wash ones clothes. Oh yes and we did not have a dryer so everything was hung on wash lines to dry. I always loved the scent of freshly line dried clotes. you cannot' get that scent in your softeners, its all natural. sun dried I guess. [Hatley]

Eleven. lol. No, no one taught me...I observed what my Mom did and figured it out, and by that point I began taking care of the house of necessity and my little brother, so laundry just got included in all that (both my parents were gone alot, working). There wasn't really any decision, and no one made me...it was just expected, along with dishes, and looking after my brother, as well as school work. I did it all myself, I managed lol. [xParanoiax]

My sister and I were expected to help with the wash and ironing when we were pretty young - probably 8-10 years old or so. Everything got done with the family laundry, but later on, if we wanted something special to wear that wasn't clean, then we were expected to take care of washing that ourselves. [newtondak]

I don't remember at what age I started but my girls are 14 and 11 and they do the household laundry. The 14 year old does most of it and the 11 year old helps with folding and putting it away. [pholdermomof3]

I was about 9 or 10. If we wanted clean clothes we usually had to do the laundry. Mom was a regular June Clever. (not) That's how I learned to cook too. You want to eat you find something and you fix it. Simple lol [Lambchoper]

My mom taught me how to do laundry pretty earn on. I was about 7 or 8 when I first learned how to separate the clothes and choose the correct settings. Since my mom worked from home, she was always around to change the laundry between the washer and dryer and I ended up just folding most of it. If i happened to be around when it stopped though, I was supposed to change the loads over and start a new one. I've been doing laundry off and on(like described above) for about 11 years, and I have the same rule with my boyfriend now about changing the loads over(although I don't make him fold it, otherwise I just have to re-do it.). Total Ive been doing laundry about 18 years(im 25 now). [Adelida2233]

Well, I think I started at 25 and I wash most of my clothes in the machine. ( pajama's hoodies , jeans,t-shirts,polos,khakis etc.) I hand wash bra's and I dry clean anything else ( comforter, business suits, dresses, nice blouses) lol i'm diverse. [shortnervesweet]

When I was in Elementary, My mom, sister and I used to wash our clothes manually so as early as 8 years old, I am already helping my mom washing our clothes, mom will ask me to wash my underwear and socks! [checapricorn]

As soon as I was tall enough to reach the controls on the washer and dryer my mom taught me how to wash my clothes. Been doing it myself ever since. I think I was bout 8 or 9 years old. [darkjedi]

I admit that I didn't start until my 3rd year of college - like 19. I would love to not do it now, but at 54 I'm kind of up the creek for doing my own wash. [ElicBxn]

My mom showed me how to do my own laundry when i was about 12 years old. At the time i was complaining about my dad washing my white clothes in with his blacks and wrecking my things. Mom said whatever i didnt want wrecked i could put away in my closet and wash them later when he wasnt at home to change the loads around. I still put somethings into the regular laundry but alot I washed myself or put in the laundry and wore during the 2 weeks dad was away at work. He would work 2 weeks on 1 week off. [saundyl]

My mom always did the washing. I helped her hang and take down the laundry when I was a kid and teen. I didn't start doing my own laundry until I was 25, when I moved out. I felt pretty lucky because I had a friend who at six years old his mom expected him to strip his bed, wash the linens, and re-make the bed all by himself. [kimbers867]

I'm pretty sure I was 16-17 when I had to start doing my own. [ashlee67]

I used to do my own laundry sometimes in high school when I was living with my parents. I would usually have to ask my mom and sister if they had anything to wash though. My mom was crazy about sorting laundry, so I wasn't allowed to wash jeans with pastels or whites with colored clothes. [phoenix25]

I did my laundry at an early age. My mom will let me wash my socks when I was younger so it will not be a heavy load. But when I grew older I'd have the initiative to do my own laundry. I wash all my clothes and sometimes I wash my mom's clothes too. [quawertz]

Well growing up the without electricity made us learn to wash clothes by hand at a early age. I started weashing my own clothes at the age of 5 in a bucket with a plunger and a scrub board. I didn't get a automatic washer till I was married. We were made to do own own laundry by my step-dad who told us that we were old enough to weld a plunger and a scrub board and do our own laundry. Nowdays on occasions my husband will help me with the laundry. But if it had to involve plunging clothes and a scrub board I doubt he be so willing to help.. [mtdewgurl74]

I started washing my own clothes at 11 years old when my mother gave birth to my younger sister. We did not have washing machine at that time and we could not afford to buy one.Since then I washed my own clothes. [nikna88]

10, I wanted to do it myself because I started buying nice clothes with my Paper route money. [gitfiddleplayer]

I was more spoiled than you dear.. I did not have to wash clothes at all, as long as I was at home and that was till I got married. After that I had a girl with me to help. She used to do the washing and cooking. I learnt to do everything only in my late twenties. Till now I have been doing my own laundry and my family's too. Now that my kids are not there with us I am doing our laundry myself with my husband's help. [madlees]

I started washing my clothes when I I was 8 yrs old but my mom said i shouldn't wash my clothes, she can manage it all..but when I was about 11 yrs old then I was asked to washed the clothes.lol. By the way it's hand washing that time and I always got hurt by rubbing thosee clothes with my barehands... sometimes there's blood because of the wounds.By now I'm using washing machine,,, thanks to technology. lol [ksha777]

Congrats on the new machine! I started doing my own laundry when I was about 9. My daughter is 14 and she has a general idea but I do it! lol I really need to start having her do her own! [laglen]
