Do You Wash New Clothes Before Your Wear Them

I wash everything before I wear/use it. My friends and grown children think I'm nuts, but even if the clothing is in a sealed package, I want to wash any dye residue or sizing out of it before I wear it. That's not all. No matter how clean a warehouse is kept there are always rats and mice and bugs. I don't want to wear/use anything that a rodent has been walking around on!

I always wash my new clothes once before I use them. Itīs important for me to do that,as Iīm allergic for many things [Garfield1]

I wash everything as well. I wash stuff that is in sealed packages too. My boyfriend thinks I'm crazy, but then again, he doesn't ever stop me from washing it either. [Adelida2233]

I understand where you are coming from, but I tend not to wash my clothes before I wear them unless they smell funny. I am just too impatient to wear new clothes lol. [Elixiress]

hi the bead! well it depends really...hehe if it smells or it looks like it has been hanging there for some time, i have it washed. otherwise, i just wear it for the first time before having it washed. lol i guess i am not that keen over that. good day dear! have a nice weekend! [spoiled311]

yeah of course i wash my new clothes before wearing it. i find it disgusting if i wear clothes which is not washed lol (sorry for the others who wear new clothes even if it's not washed) i agree with you even the packaging is good, we never know what's the process on making a new clothes.. lol [xxjinx8xx]
Thanks, I have a friend who is a clean freak, but she doesn't have any qualms about buying new clothes and wearing them straight off the rack. I just can't do that. [thebeaddoodler]

I also wash the clothing before wearing, but I don't mind if there is rodent having walked through. The things I mind is the residue of the chemistry reagent used to make the clothes, if it remains on the clothes, it will hurt my skin and affect my health. But usually, rodent will not infect me by skin. The only thing I don't wash before wearing are socks, for the skin of my feet are not so important to me. [xplp211]

Hi, me too because someone could to try on the clothes and I don't know about her health and for the same of you. Many people live around us with some skin illness and we don't know. [teka44]
That's a very good point that most people don't even think about. [thebeaddoodler]

I usually wash them. Sometimes new clothes have weird odor. [cautionhot01]

You are definitely not nuts, I've learned the hard way to do that after being itchy a few times...your right, it gets any chemicals left over off and even just rinsing first gets dyes off that may have stained other clothing...most in my family do it too, so tell them there are other nuts out there just like you!! [Tallymommy]

Always, my wife wash before use. [as2006]

Well, I don't! My Mum insists that washing them would spoil that "new" look. But yes, you do bring up a very valid point. Hmm... [lordwarwizard]

i do.most new clothes are stiff and itchy, they'll irritate me if i don't get whatever that is out (starch?).sometimes they have a store smell on them too, that's got to go. i didn't even think of bugs..eeeew.. but i'm sure you're right. [scarlet_woman]

I agree 100%, I wash everything before I wear it. You just never know what germs may on it or what it came in contact with. aside from warehouse concerns, you never know if something gets spilled on it or what happens during transport. [vicneedscoffee]

Depends on what it is. Underwear, bras, and bathing suits I absolutely alwaysd wash no matter what. But with things like t-shirts and jeans, I dont bother. I guess I dont see the need to haha since I usually wash everything after wearing it once anyway. [m0rnings]

I use to wash them all the time, and I still do sometimes. but here lately I haven't. [shymurl]

Yes, we do wash our new clothes even if we just bought it but there are times that I don't wash it... hehehe. Thanks. [jesbellaine]

I always do this to wash out any extra dye, as it might trigger my allergies (which is not something I need to have happen). [cripfemme]

Outer clothes, not usually. Underclothes is a different story. [cjgrooms]

normaly i'll wash it but sometimes i have to waer it right away and i think its not that dirty then i'll waer it straight without washing [szechow_ong]

Sometimes I will wash them, but sometimes I will not wash them. If I buy jeans or coats, I do not wash them If I buy some T-shirts ,maybe I will wash them. It is hard for me to say. That is depend on my feeling. [SusannaW]

Of course, I wash my new clothes before wear it. We all know that the new clothes have been tried on before we got it! And it is terrible before you wash it! LoL [lynnlwn308033129]

It's important to wash new clothes before you wear them. indeed there may be Surplus dye in it (ever get blue legs in the rain from a pair of new jeans? then you know what I mean!)or other agents such as starch which can be scratchy and irritating. But I guess the most important thing for me personally is that I don't like the way stuff smells. [aplaza]

I only wash new clothes before I wear them if they feel stiff and hard or have lots of creases in them . If not then I just hang them up and wear them. When the children were babies yes I washed everythi g that was new or given to me before I dressed the babies in them. It just felt right to do it, I do know people who wash everything new before they wear it, but i repect if thats what they want to do then there is nothing wrong with it as we are all different and do different things. [Anne18]

I do wash used clothing, but not always new. My mother-in-law washes everything and when we first moved in together my husband asked if he needed to put new clothes in the hamper. I don't care. If they smell funny or feel rough I wash them, but otherwise no. [Ruthep]

I always try it on first (if I ordered something to be delivered) to make sure it fits, but otherwise I then wash everything before wearing it for the day! I agree with the rats and such.......yuck! [b1jah2]

i sometimes wash clothes that are new..especially if it has an odor..or for hygine purpose.. [chubibo]

Its a good habit to wash everything before using because even if the garment is in a sealed package we dont know how it was kept before it was sealed and in what kind of a factory it was stitched in the first place. There may have been rats running all over the place there! [mayka123]

I always wash them before wearing for the first time to take out the starch and the dye residues.More over it might have been touched and felt by so many people in the stores.I never wear a new dress without washing it first. [balasri]
Yeah of course it makes you immensely happy to come across like minded people anywhere. [balasri]

No I never do. In fact, I actually like the smell of new clothes. I also like how they feel on me! Now that I read your discussion though I might think twice. Rats and mice ewww. [coffeeshot]

i wash my clothes every time ,because i canot stand for the new closths smell... [milk87]

I have a habit of washing it. My mom has taught me that you'll never know if it has been fitted or not even if they say it was sealed. The smell of the clothes from the plastic bag is also bad. It is better to be preventive of things to come than be sorry at the end. Sometimes the chemical that they used to keep it safe is harmful for our skin especialy the armpit. In my opinion, it is better to wash before we use. =) [leateagee]
Thank you for voting me as the best response. I hope I really deserve it. Thank you again because you just gave me another reason to write more. This is an inspiration to me. Take care =) [leateagee]

Yes, even if they are in a sealed package. they could be wrinkled or dusty even though they have not yet been worn. [bowtieguy]

Absolutely. A friend of mine said she's read several articles about how clothing is sometimes treated with formaldehyde to prevent mildewing during shipping, so we always wash before wearing. We do the same for our thrift store finds too. [susanh39]

Yes I do wash new clothes before I wear them.I don't like the smell of a freshly packed dress. It is not very appealing. Also the packaging and folding of the dress tends to produce very stubborn wrinkles on the dress. So I like to wash it first to remove those as well as to clean the dress of chemicals if any present on the surface. [nikhil_sun]

I do beacause they have a funny smell to them most times. It just feels cleaner to me . In the past I have though. [metschica25]

I don't wash new clothes. I don't have sensitive skin, so it's not necessary. I can see why some people might though, to wash away irritants. [GreenMoo]

of course you have to wash them first before you wear new clothes! it might been tried on by other customers for sure! it might have dirt on them or become sweaty after they put it on and decided not to buy of course the stocksman will just return it over the bag or something right? so you have to think of your hygiene too [angel_kaycee]

Hi Mooch's Friend: Yes I wash everything I buy before I wear them. You never know what germs are still on them from being made to being put in a package. I like cloths to feel soft so when I wash the cloths they come out softer than they were when I unwrapped them. Have a great evening. Ivor [TheSpy]

as much as possible i wash newly bought clothes too before wearing them. i don't think they are clean because they've been displayed in the department store for too long. and even if its taken from the stocks, it doesn't smell nice so i really wash it before wearing them. but there are instances that i can't avoid wearing them without washing them first. like, if i'm on a travel and my clothes went short and i don't have something to wear for the next day, i would buy a new one and wear them the next day without washing it since it might not dry overnight. happy [secretbear]

If I purchase used clothing, I definitely wash them before wearing them. It isn't likely that they were washed by the used clothing shop -- and you don't know if the previous owner tossed them in her washer before taking them in to the resale shop. Sometimes, I will wear new clothing without washing them because I get brand new clothes so seldom that I get great joy from smelling the new clothing. :-) However, if there's a chance it has been tried on and it is pants, shorts, swimsuit, underwear or anything that could have gotten near someone else's crotch . . . let's just say, ew, ew, ew! -- into the washer they go! Oh, and thank you very much now for the enlightenment about the rodents and bugs. yuk. [Annie2]

I don't think you are crazy. I always bring my clothes home and wash them before wearing. Although, I have been known, in the distant past, to wear a new bra home. (Hey, somebody like me can't be walking around the mall in a broken bra!*LOL*) [thebohemianheart]

I used to just wear new clothes. I didn't bother washing them at all that was until I developed an allergic reaction to something. I couldn't pin it down to anything. So to play it safe I started washing all my new clothes before wearing them. It didn't really help but at least I elimated one possible cause. Now it has became a habit so I'll wash all my new clothes before wearing them. [applefreak]

It is something that is recommended. in some stores they told us also. it helps the colour not to fade out. but its not always done by me. it also removes the dye residue. [subha12]

No ; I do that ;not in case of my Shirts or Trousers; but in case of Brand New Bedsheets , Towels as well as Handkerchiefs . [icon_001]

No I don't wash new clothes before wearing them, because don't feel I need to, I just wear my new clothes. [notlistening2]

I wash every new clothing item as well, including socks and bras. For regular clothes, you never know who may have tried them on in the store so I not only want to clean the shirt from dye residue, etc, but also from any person whose skin it may have touched. As for socks and items in sealed packages, I guess part of me is just used to cleaning them before wearing. I don't really care for the "new" clothes smell, I prefer a fresh start with anything that will be touching my body for a period of time. [goodnightmoon]

no offense to your friends, but I am with you on this one. A person never knows how many people have worked on the clothing. Or for that matter how many people have touched it. Something else, where and for how long has it been sitting before shipping it to whichever store we get it from. I am in the same boat. Takes a bit more time, but really worth it. [ersmommy1]
