Dress Codes And Uniforms In Schools

happy Hello :) When I was in school years ago, we had a "dress code" but did not wear uniforms. There are some debates today about dress codes and uniforms...some believe it robs a student of their individuality, while others feel that it puts students on equal ground and helps prevent "labeling" of some as odd, poor, etc. Do the students in your area have a special dress code or do they wear uniforms? Or are they allowed to dress however they wish? What do you think is best, and why? Karen

My daughter's school don't have any uniform but they do have the dress codes. So, they can wear anything as long as they are not violated the dress codes. When I was in school, I did wear uniform. My mom said sometimes it's better with uniform, so it don't give a headache on what to wear every morning. My daughter only 8 and 6 yrs old, and a lot of times we kind of argue of what she going to wear the next day...LOL...which is won't happen if they have uniform. [ibuemma]
happy Hello Ibuemma. Your mom has made a good point that I had not thought of. My three daughters used to agonize and fret and take forever to decide what to wear to school each day. So yes, a uniform would resolve that LOL. I appreciate you sharing that. Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

Well in my area where i live there are pubic schools, magnet schools, charter schools and private schools. The charter and private schools all have a uniform they have to wear from school that they had to buy from the school. All other schools that are in the county must wear a collard t-shirt tucked in with a belt. This dress code is kind hard for some kids but they let a few slip buy hear and there. Some of the high schools around town only allow collard shirts of certain colors which is kinda ridiculous but i guess its better that way for that school. NO schools allows flip flops and you must not wear them ever you must have a shoe not look like a flip flop to wear it to school. Dress codes can be good and can be bad. [lologirl2021]
happy Hi Lolo. As you said, there is good and bad about dress codes, but flip flops are banned here, too, for Safety reasons. I do agree with the logic of that. Also, kids here cannot wear things that show too much flesh, etc., which is just common decency. I do know that when something allowable is a fad and expensive, it sets some kids apart and they are labeled "poor" or picked on. To me, that is sad. sad Take care and have a great night. Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

In my country all schools wear uniform and I am glad. Our uniforms were horrible, expensive and uncomfortable but I have a feeling bullying would be a lot worse than it is now if no uniforms were present. School is already divided up into groups of people and if students were able to express themselves as an individual even more I am sure it would come even more extreme. I suffered from bullying throughout school with our uniforms on, I used to hate the days where for some occasion we got to wear our own clothes. It was horrible as everyone judged you on what you wore. Weirdly enough, I wear my own clothes to university and did at college too. I think it is more appropriate when you have left school as you tend to leave that kind of childishness behind. [pinklemonade]
happy Hi Pink...nice screen name :) I agree that uniforms put all the kids on a more equal footing as to how one looks and that less teasing would result. I see that as a positive thing. And yes, once we reach college, it is far less childish in the respect of picking on people for what they do or do not wear. Thank you for your input and have a good night. Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

happy Hi Karen! How are you doing? Miss you. Coming to the discussion, I am in favour ofa dresscode till school level. I feel itsessential in the growing process of a child. The feeling of being one and also not being distracted by prosperity andextravagance is very important. This also instills in us a feeling of oneness, decorum and obeyance. [mimpi1911]
happy LOL, thank you Zan...have a great evening! [PeacefulWmn9]

tHEY DO NOT WEAR UNIFORMS BUT THERE IS A DRESS CODE & THEY STICK BY IT as they should. Some of the students boys & girls alike would come to school w/it all hanging out if they could. Wonder where the parents are when they do this????? [ANTIQUELADY]
happy Hello my friend. I am glad they have a dress code in our schools, too. Even young children have a tendency to dress too provocatively these days if rules are not enacted and enforced. That kind of behavior comes soon enough as it is!! I hope your evening is going well. Thank you for responding. Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

Hello my friend smoochess to you happy I think school uniforms are the best thing since banana pudding, not only do they look nice when you see all the kids dressed in their uniform it saves a lot of money for the parents, and like you said it cuts down on the teasing for kids that might not be able to afford the expensive jeans or whatever it is others kids may wear, I love the idea [kitty42]
Hello my friend happy Well I got this one a little late [kitty42]

Hello karen I live in alabama and yes this year we went to uniforms. It was a pain in the butt to have to buy 5 sets of uniforms for all 4 of my kids but now that this is over with I think this is a great idea. The uniform policy has put a end to our boys walking around with their pants hanging down showing off the behind and although it hasnt stopped this completely it is has decreased it significantly. also I have noticed my sons taking pride in making sure they are within the school code with much more serious precautions. So I do think that uniforms are the way to go and for the parents of large families like myself we dont have to worry about kids being teased because they dont have the namebrand clothes. Everything is now basic. Thanks! [CORDALE]
happy Hi Cordale. Clothes seem to cost so much no matter what kind they are! I am happy that the uniforms have had a positive effect on your sons. I can also see a great advantage for kids who cannot afford all the name brand things which cost a fortune! Thank you for responding Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

In my opinion a uniform is far preferable, we had a dress code at our school and had to wear all the right clothes, failure to do this meant we were either sent home or letters to our parents warning us about the rules of wearing the correct clothes, and jewellery too, boys weren't even allowed to wear earings, that's how far I go back! I do believe this is for the greater good, because if you were able to wear your own clothes there would be added bullying for families who were not able to dress their children in the latest fashion or with designer labels and tags would be subject to bullying and called names. Bullying was bad enough at me school, believe me I was the subject of it, I think if we didn't have uniform then I would have got bullied even more, as my family were not rich, far from it. It also distinguishes the school by the uniform so if there is any trouble outside school it reflects badly on the school and the perpetrators can easily be named and shamed by the uniform they are wearing, so it teaches them that their behaviour is not only monitored in school but outside too. I do hope they never decide to do away with uniforms especially in this day and age where designer labels are a must and sadly bullying goes on. [wolfie34]

Lately, it seems that more and more schools in my area are enforcing uniforms. When I was growing up, there was no dress code until I got to middle school. (I'm not sure if that was distrcit-wide or schoolwide though.) When I got to high school, I actually attended a school for two years, one of which enforced a dress code. After that I left and went to another high school which had no uniform requirement although it did have a dress code. Honestly, my best memories from high school, or any years of schooling for that matter, were from that one year I was required to wear a uniform to school. I don't know if it prevents the 'labeling' so to speak, but it does seem to have had an affect on the majority of the students academically speaking. It seems that students were able to focus better without the distraction of another students loud t-shirt of outfit, if that makes sense. And no one could get made fun of for their outfit because everyone else was wearing pretty much the same thing, though there were slight variations (mainly one of four different colors were allowed.) (Wow, this is quite long..apologies for those who don't like to read that much!) [lwelizabeth]
happy Hello Elizabeth :) I had dress codes when in high school, too, and yes, kids that age are very much into styles, trends, and friends. So a uniform definitely would have squashed some of the distractions that hindered study! And with uniforms, no monentary distinctions are obvious. That always makes it harder for those who cannot afford to go trendy or name brand. It's a shame, but that is how it has been for a long time. Like you, I think uniforms are a great idea! Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

Hi,Well talking about uniforms and dress codes in schools i think its necessary to maintain unity among all. There is nothing that by having uniforms students will lost their individuality.By having these rules students can be controlled in certain limits. In our country every school has uniforms and some colleges also have some dress codes as per their rules. So,i prefer these dress codes in all schools. And anyhow one day in a week is allowed to wear normal dress in some of the schools. If they want they can dress up as they like but according to dress code rules. [zareenalot]
happy Hello Zareen. You make so much sense in your line of reasoning for prefering that all schools should have uniforms. And yes, for other days, a dress code. Such guidelines do prevent many troubles and begin our young people on a more equal footing.happy I appreciate your input here and wish you a good evening. Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

I am from the UK where the majority of schools have a uniform at least until they reach 16. Our schools are different from those in the US. We have State schools which are free and also public schools which you have to pay to attend. You would call our public school a private school (they are known by both names here). Both types of school have uniforms and I think it is a good idea but has one main flaw. I think it is a good idea because it sort of levels things out in terms of the financial background of individual students. If there was no uniform policy I think it would highlight the differences in financial status between students which in turn may contribute to bullying. The main flaw is that a lot of schools demand you buy uniforms from a very specific place which is often expensive. It is wrong and I hope this stops as uniforms are so expensive it becomes a real financial burden on less well off families when their kids start a new school or just need new clothes. In general I see uniforms at school as a good thinghappy [mike197601]

In India most of the schools are forcing to wear uniform in schools. I dont think it is important to wear the uniform. Students should learn things from schools which will help them to build their career. My opinion is "Dress Code" is better than "Uniform". :) [rgmuthu]
Hello Rgmuthu. Welcome to MyLot! I think many kids who can afford the popular regular clothes would love to wear them than uniforms. As with most things, there are pros and cons to both regular wear and uniforms. As for a dress code instead, that might be a good middle ground.happy Thank you for expressing your opinion here, and have a lovely night.happy Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

My entire student life (yes, until college) I went to schools with uniforms. Okay, during college it was more like a dress code: CORPORATE ATTIRE ONLY. Long sleeved blouses, black skirt, skin-toned stockings, blazer, black heels for the ladies and long sleeved polo, black slacks, black socks and shoes, tie and coat for the gentlemen. At least only our building applies that dress code because of our degree, with the other degrees they also have a dress code but they're more casual. No rubber flipflops, no short shorts, etc. I think it's okay to have uniforms and/or dress codes. There'd be no discrimination and it teaches the students responsibility and equality too. [marababe]
happy Hi Mara :) You make such good sense. When a strict dress code is followed or when uniforms are a must, there is less monetary discrimination and more attention, perhaps, to dignity and studies. I certainly appreciate your stating your experience and opinion. Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

We had a dress code when I went to school which was quite strict. We had to wear black skirts with a white blouse. Not a uniform as such but the skirts ranged from mini's to long in length and we were not allowed to wear trousers as girls can do these days in some schools. No 'sports' footwear, no make up, no jewellery and if you didn't adhere to this you were sent home with a letter to explain why! My kids all had uniforms which I think is much better. Even though the intial outlay is expensive, it does stop the 'labelling' and they got ready quicker as they didn't have to spend half an hour deciding what to wear! and they had to wear shoes instead sports tpye footwear. Personally, I still think they have individuality with a uniform as some turn the collars up, some like to show off their boxers having their trousers so low and they are allowed accessories such as make up, jewellery. [sunnysmiles]
happy Hello Sunny. I like the ways you've presented that children can maintain a separate identity, even when in uniform. I do think those are the best way to go, in light of common sense, as well as all the wonderful insights given here by fellow MyLotters. Thank you for your personal input! Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

now they use school uniforms so that students can be easily recognized and that strangers in the school are too and to that end, i think that is a pretty good idea. my teenager would hate it, i know but so what? (she likes to look 'fashionable') [cher913]
happy Hello Cher. I've learned so much through this discussion, and now you've offered yet a new thing. I hadn't thought it, but yes, you're right. Uniforms would distinguish the students from others who were perhaps up to no good or otherwise did not belong in the school. Yes, I imagine teens wouldn't like it, as they seem to have their own unique styles, but they'll be okay lol. Have a beautiful night. Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

It has never happened here. There is no dress code but there is a common knowledge when something is inapropriate. The clothes do say something about you, but they only say what you want them to say. Here there is no more are you poor or wealthy it's more like are you a punker or rocker or similar stuff [Daraiki]
happy Hi Daraiki. I did have a dress code, and so did my daughters, and now my grandkids, but the codes keep getting more relaxed. Some of the poorer children are still picked on, rather than being embraced as part of one group or another. I hate to see that! I am glad to hear it does not seem to be a problem where you attend school.happy Thank you for your opinion and input and have a nice night. Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

Hi Karen! Here in our city, almost 95% of schools of uniforms and all students are required to wear uniform. I suppose it makes sense the when all students wear same uniform, there looks a uniformity and they look similar. If they get to wear different dress, they might feel the difference in their financial status and that may affect their relations with each other. [dpk262006]

We have uniforms in all Indian schools. As you said the law makers feel it brings a sense of equality and i feel it is a discipline. Casual dress can make kids feel casual than concentrating on what they are doing. It is my personal belief that dress/attire also sets one's mood to work/play/study/sleep. I think uniforms are good because this instills the habit of maintaining one's cloths and also respect other children and not treat them with the "status" in mind. happy [divkris]
Hello Kris. You've voiced yet another good reason for schools to require uniforms...to put students in the right frame of mind to study! Like you, I feel that different clothes set for us different moods. happy Thank you for sharing your opinion, and have a nice evening. Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

in school education, still uniforms are followed as a dress code in my area. i feel this is good here because students from different status are being studied in a single classroom.. since it is a school life, even a small incidence will have a great impact on their mind.. if we have just a dress code instead of uniforms, a poor student will feel bad if he/she has seen a student with good (costly/grand) dress which paves way for depression that leads to poor concentration in studies.. [Vijayasankkar]
happy Hi Vijay...I completely agree with your opinion here. Our school years and how we are treated during them have a great impact on us, both at the time and even into our future. Hense, uniforms help prevent discrimination based on financial state. Have a wonderful evening.happy Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

hi karen, in our place most of the convents(private Education institutions) follow the dress code i think this is for the recognition of the school, bout our govt. institutions will not follow the dress code, have a nice day [yugasini]

I went to school under both circumstances and could not really say one was better than another. When we were in uniform, we kids still knew who cam from money and who didn't and the teachers knew also. [savypat]
happy Hi Pat. It sounds as though you, like I, went to school in a smaller town. If so, then yes, everybody knows everybody else's "status." Or as the female lead in Doc Hollywood put, poop, and in three minutes, everyone will know what color it is! Ack! w00t Thank you. Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

Almost all high school/secondary schools here in our country requires dress code or uniforms. However, when I got into college, we have much more freedom. We can wear any clothes as long as it's presentable without having BOLD prints on your shirt. I think it's cooler that way. [incredibleDNA]
happy Hi DNA. I've went where there was always a dress code, back in the day as the kids now call it, but not where uniforms were worn. Well, except at sporting events. College almost always presents a student with more freedoms. I think they realize that we "mature" a bit by then lol. Thank you for sharing your experiences and views. Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

I grew up going to schools only with a dress code not a uniform...and when I do have kids I don't want them going to a school with a uniform. I do feel that kids should be able to wear what they want as long as it falls within their school's dress code. I do believe it shows their individuality and their personality. [dreamr802]
happy Hi Dreamr...I do know some others feel that uniforms "rob" a child of their own preferences, etc. But yes, at the least, a code of decency is demanded in schools when a uniform is not.happy Thank you for sharing your opinions and have a great night. Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

The schools where I live they do have a dress code and some schools have uniforms. I do believe that it takes anyway from the child's individuality. I think that it can be good in some terms. Such as not have girls walking around with inappropriate outfits and boys walking around with pants below their butt. [Duvalgirlmagic]
lol Hi Duval, yes showing bellies, cleavage, and behinds just seems a bit improper to be conducive to studying in a serious manner! Some do believe, as you, that forcing a look of sameness robs one of individuality. Here, even though the dress code is informal, most teens seem to dress in such a similar manner anyway lol.happy Thank you so much for your opinion and input. Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

I don't think it robs students of their individuality at all because there are hours after school and weekends too where they can wear what they want. Looking back I went to 2 different schools. The first was a local comprehensive and it was wear what you like, but sooooo much time was spent on dress sense, judgments, and making fun of...horrible really...taught people to be too self conscious at too young an age. The second school was a private boarding school and we had a uniform. Admittedly we all moaned about the horrible uniform, but it cut alot of stress of....Oh what shall I wear and this doesn't look right...bla bla..it was extremely hassle free and people made alot less judgments about it and it created a good community spirit, which I think is a healthy thing to have whilst growing up. After lecture hours we had free time and could change into our own clothes and at the weekends we were free to where whatever, so it gave a good sense of individuality and conformity. [sritrinity]
happy Hi Trinity. Always nice to "see" you. :) I do believe, like you, that students are very much able to express their unique identities after school hours and on breaks. The uniforms would take away a lot of guesswork and help prevent certain social and financial discriminations, in my opinion. So many students want to fit in and "look" quiet alike, even when uniforms are not required.confused Thank you for partaking in this discussion. Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

We had a dress code growing up, girls had to wear dresses. It was a big deal when they started allowing pants. My kids have it a little easier, they can't have shorts shorter than a certain length, too think straps on tops, etc. I'm fine with that. The girls were in a private school for a while. They had to wear the school polo shirt with either a skirt or pants. The only time I had a problem was when they changed the "chapel day" dress code at the last minute after I had already gone out shopping. [dawnald]
happy Hi Dawnald...so you're pretty experienced with all the ways of school dress. Like you, we had the "code"...skirts/dresses were a must for young women. My Sr. year in high school, they allowed a pantsuit on Fridays. It was more relaxed for my daughters, and more relaxed yet for my grandkids, but still, there are "codes of decency" in dress, which I agree is a good thing. I appreciate your comments here happy Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

In my place students wear complete and proper uniform. Well, for me uniform is the best because some rich kids may show off their attire if in dress code and the equality and right of the student is gone, and to maintain this, it's advisable to be in uniform. [marctiu]
happy Hi Marctiu. It's nice to hear that you, as a student, agree with the dress rules of your school. I agree with you that the uniforms must remove a lot of worry from those students of lesser means who might otherwise be bullied. That would effect someone in a very negative way, and make study more difficult.sad Thank you for your opinions and information, and have a nice day. Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

Hi Karen, Most elementary and high schools in my country have prescribed uniforms. Aside from the fact that a school is easily recognized by the uniform worn by students, it also instills a feeling of belongingness, it decreases the occurrences of arguments over fashionable clothes; and ensures that students are dressed appropriately. For the parents, it is more economical and saves time thinking about what the kids will wear. The university I attended didn't have a uniform, wearing shorts and clothes that cover less of the body parts was not prohibited, although some (if not most frown) at it. I kind of didn't like it, probably because I didn't have much to show to wear revealing clothes lol. It also distracted the other students particularly the males and even the professors/instructors. I prefer my kids to wear uniforms while in elementary and high school. I'll be okay if the college they attend doesn't have uniform - maybe by that time I can trust them to make their own choices. I just hope they won't go for hip-hop, or dark oversized shirts and pants that make them look like goons, I hate seeing kids in this kind of clothing. Hey don't get me wrong, I'm not judgmental, I'm just conservative.happy [doryvien]
happy Hi Dory :) From the responses here, I've learned so much. I can easily see the desirability of uniforms, for all the reasons you've mentioned. It would be a wise way to go, for sure. Like you, I am conservative, and would not wish even college teens, were my children not already gone, to dress in revealing or bizarre ways. It takes something away from an atmosphere conducive to serious study...for teachers and students! shocked Thank you for sharing your experiences and opinions here. Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

The school in my area do not wear uniforms but they do have a dress code. There are certain clothing that students can not wear to school and the dress code is follow for every student in that school. [happy6162]
happy Hello Happy. This is how is was when I was in school, too, and even when my daughters, now grown up, attended school. There do have to be some kind of lines drawn, if for nothing else than decency's sake, so a code is good!happy Thank you for your response, and have a great day. Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

I really don't like the idea of uniforms. Sure it appears to put students on equal ground but does it really. We are all different. Aren't we trying to teach kids to balance between being themselves and being respectful. We want them to learn these things while still in school. Also we want to teach them to accept the differences in each other and what kind of example is that...making them all dress alike? School is where they learn academics, yes. It is also where they learn social skills and real life. In real life we don't all wear the same uniform. It isn't going to stop the bullying or whatever they are trying to do by making them wear uniforms. I get the dress code but uniforms...NO! [sid556]
happy Hi Sid. I hear what you are saying. Of course we should encourage individuality. Perhaps a good way to do that where clothing alone is concerned would be at after-school activities that most students take part in. I do know that many students at a financial disadvantage are often singled out and picked on or bullied. Uniforms would help curb that, but again, I do hear you about promoting children to be themselves, to let their individuality shine. happy Thank your for voicing your opinions, and have a beautiful day! Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

Hi Here in all schools, uniforms are mandatory and we feel its actually good to have them, because of the reasons you stated like, students being on equal grounds and prevents labelling, however in my school ,we used to follow a tradition where when there are festivals or if its a birthday of the student , they were allowed to wear a special dress other than the uniform, only priviledged for the birthday students.... I remember also in my old school, had studied for just a year or so, where every wednesday they had the rule of everyone wearing watever dress they want, and not wearing the uniforms [san_683]
happy Hello San :) I think the way it was done in your school is a good compromise. I do think uniforms are a great way to go, but the occasional break from them would be a nice treat. For instance, the birthday child would feel very special, and sometimes, that added honor gives a good boost to one's self-esteem. Thank you for sharing your insights!happy Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

hi peace, here in our country, Philippines, we do have a uniforms for all students.. starting from day care, elementary, high school and college.. i remembered last time when i forgot to wash my uniform that was Tuesday and i was never allowed to enter inside the campus and then i ended up going home and be absent the whole day.. huhuh..!! janebeth. [janebeth]
happy Hi Janebeth. Since the uniforms are being "tried out" in certain schools here in the US, I am anxious to see if it will become the main thing, as it is in many countries. I can see that it would solve a lot of issues, and rather do hope it catches on. So...you had to miss a day without the uniform? I guess rules were rules then lol. I hope you at least enjoyed the time off lol Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

All throughout my academic life, spanning 18 years I had to wear uniform!Well, to an extent it robs us the freedom from expressing ourselves, more or less our individuality. But then it also bring everything to one single ground of just being student .Atleast once and while we should be allowed to express ourselves. But then i kind of support the uniform .Thanks! [UltimateAsoka]
happy Hi Ultimate. I think it is important what you said, that the uniforms bring everyone/thing to a single ground of just being a student. I imagine it relieves a lot of various pressures, and allows students to better focus on studies. I do, however, believe expressing individuality is important, but perhaps that was done after school and on weekends when friends got together? It would be a good balance, if so. Thank you for sharing you views.happy Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

Hi friend, Yes,Dress code and uniform in schools is compulsary. When i am in school days i used to wear a school uniform. In my school dress code and uniform is compulsary to wear a uniform of every students. In our school class from 1st class to 10th class is same dress code to all students. HAve a great day. [23uday]
happy Hello there :) I am learning that uniforms are compulsory in many schools across the world, and I personally think that is a good rule. Here in the United States, we do have dress codes, but even then, some students dressed in a rather inappropriate way, to this grammas way of thinking lol.lol Thank you for sharing your experiences, and have a nice day. Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

When i was at school couple years ago, we are allowed to dress free on Saturday, but since Saturday is holiday, now we did not allowed to use free dress anymore on Friday, though it is fun, just like a Holiday lol We don't feel "labeling" as your experiences, we just wear nice, and comfort dress to school, no one underestimate others, since we are all friends happy [maxilimian]
happy Hello Max. A day to dress more freely as yourself is nice. And I absolutely think that it is a beautiful thing that students were all friends and not labeled or picked upon. The "bullying" that too often goes on in some areas can be a devastating thing!shocked Thank you for expressing your experience in this discussion. Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

We have a uniform policy at the elementary school my grandsons go to and we like it. It's convenient to be able to send them to school in a uniform because it looks tidy and no one can really tell that we don't have much money and buy a lot of our school uniforms at thrift stores. If we really needed the help, the school helps out those kids that can't afford the uniforms by holding uniform drives to collect uniforms. Overall, we've been really happy with the uniform policy and neither one of the boys seems to have suffered from a lack of individuality. [horsesrule]
happy Hello to you :) I think it's wonderful that their is help available when it is needed to buy uniforms. We have similar drives for school backpacks, shoes, coats, etc. in my area. And yes, individulity comes mostly from within rather than from whatever one wears on the outside. Thank you for sharing your experiences and ideas Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

i remembered my school days because of ur discussion.ya my school has dress code but i enjoy bunking my dresscode and wearing colour dress. i find two strange ideas which is related to dresscode 1 according to teachers or lecturers dress codes means uniformity as such all are equal in school no rich no poor etc 2 according to students its a regular routine booring stuff which you have to wear even though ur not interested in it but some cool dudes like me enjoy bunking the dress code n be different from others [bvijayks]
happy Hi Bvijayks. I hope your school memories are good ones! We have dress codes, but they say more what you cannot wear than that everyone must dress in a similar way. If someone breaks those rules here, they are sent home and cannot come back unless they follow the rules, which are not awful or anything. happy Thank you for expressing your opinions, and have a nice day. Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

When I was still studying we have school uniforms and many prefer to wear it so we would not thinking what to wear in school everyday. If you have a uniform you would not buy clothes very often for school so it is much cheaper. Not all students can afford to buy new clothes even if the public schools don't requiring the students to wear uniform as long as the clothes they are wearing in school is clean and decent. [agv0419]
happy Hi Agv. After having seen (and heard) my daughters agonizing each morning about what to wear to "look cool or fit in" all through their middle school and high school years, I am thinking uniforms would have been a blessing! And yes, all clothes cost money, but with uniforms, a few would do, since they can be washed often. happy I appreciate your opinions and thank you for responding. Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

there are some schools in the philippines that don't prescribe uniforms to their college students but i've been a personnel of a college and during days when students are allowed to wear civilian clothing they are given a penalty or a warning from the guidance office to which i run. the reason is we're grooming professionals so students are limited by the dress code. individuality and even creativity can still be expressed through colors and plain creativity itself in trying to bring this out even with dress codes happy. peace surrender. [Ritchelle]
shocked Yes, Ritchelle, it seems pants keep riding lower, and tops keep getting shorter! Everything in between is just right out there...and that has to be an attention-grabber. Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

From 5 years old until I was 17 yrs old I wore a school uniform and I am definitely 100% all for it. After seeing all that went on with my own daughter attending a school that had no uniform code there is so much distraction and competition where the kids all take notice of what is being worn instead of learning. [whiteheather39]
happy Hi Heather. They say experience is the best teacher, and I am with you 100%. I wish uniforms had been a requirement when my own daughters were growing up. It always seemed that clothes were far too much a focus, and yes, a distraction when the actual focus should have been on education! Thank you for sharing your experiences. Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

When I was in school I went to a private school, so I had a uniform, then going into high school I was lost. There was no uniform and no dress code. I had to figure out my individuality the hard way. However, I am torn on this debate. On one hand I think that people should be able to choose what they wear and where they it, as long as it is within reason. Like the movie with Adam Sandler when he found out he was a dad supposedly. He let his son choose what to wear, I think his son went overboard on his outfit, however he was being unique and expressing his individuality. Now on the other hand, some people do take it too far with what they wear. Now a days kids go to school half clothed or with their pants hanging below their knees. That I feel is inappropriate. Pretty soon we will have to blindfold our kids just to walk down the street. I don't think that if a school enforces a dress code or uniform that it should cost the parent extra money though. That should all be provided for. Maybe then there won't be as many objections, especially in times that it's harad enough to get food on the table, little own buy a uniform. It would also save on cost of a "school year" wardrobe. They wouldn't need as many new clothes at the start of a new year. Great discussion, thanks. Have a Blessed Day! [mdrgsm]
Hi Md...wow! You've brought up so many great points to consider, and that is great. Like you, I think NO dress code invites too much bawdy junk...half dressed teens, vulgar t-shirts, etc. Not exactly conducive to studying. That's a bit too much self-expression and leeway, yes? And then the cost. In that respect, uniforms "might" be a savings. Parents who try to keep up with the Jone's, so to speak, can go broke on just one pair of name-brand jeans! thumbdown Some of the discussions here have suggested good alternatives...a dress code vs a uniform, or uniforms, with the option to buy them used or have some monetary help to get them (available in some locations), or uniforms with a few days where one can come in their "normal" clothes. The responses here have been so enlightening! Thank you for yours. Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

Yes we have dress code for college students and uniforms for school children in India. And for the very same reasons of uniformity and decency. I am a die hard conservative and support both despite the protests the young people put up. At school or college a student is participating in a mass activity of learning. It is simply not possible to be individualistic in that atmosphere. All the teaching and the rules have been designed on regional averages in learning parameters and are very relevant. The only way individuality can be projected is to standout in the very purpose of schooling, learning. If clothing were to determine individuality, then individual tutoring is the only way. As far as dress code is concerned, the whole purpose of going to school or college is to learn. It is not as if schools or colleges are fashion shows where young individuals can flaunt the latest trend in fashion industry. Yes "Feel good" factor is necessary, but diverting attention from learning to fancies is simply not desirable. If fashion is a consideration, after school hours are always there for it. Chill out then. [webearn99]
happy Hi Web...I totally agree with all you've said. School is for learning, not for "socializing." Socializing can be done after school days or at other functions. And it certainly shouldn't be a fashion show.thumbdown As you've said, individuality can be shown in scholastic excellence, or in personality alone, rather than in dress. And friendships and friendly competition are another way to shine and yet still focus on the importance of education. Again, extraordinary information and opinion. Thank you! Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

Hi Peaceful...I can understand the case against dress codes but I believe that there is more of a case for them especially in the situations of recent years. I think that with more cases of bullying and labeling there is cause for concern as the dress of a student can single them out as being poor or "not in". Although my son is not even of elementary school age I wonder what will happen when he has to go to school and is not wearing the "right" sneakers or other item of clothing. I remember a story a colleague once told me about her daughter - I believe she was in high school at the time. The daughter pleaded with the mother to purchase this particular bag for her - and it was expensive. The mother finally purchases the bag and the daughter gets teased anyway because that particular bag was "last week." It's sad that so much is placed on what you have instead of who you are but in this day and age that's my best argument for a dress code. [deejean06]
happy Hi Deejean. I can identify with your concerns. When I was in school, we hadn't a lot of money...not destitute or anything, but still, not able to keep up with all the latest "fads." And the same was true when my own kiddoes were in school. I allowed them ONE brand name something, and the rest was decent but inexpensive. And it is sad when the teasing and bullying go on. Education is the purpose, not fashion or social hour. That is why the more I research the matter, the more convinced that uniforms are the best way to go for parents and students! Thank you so much for your insightful response. Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

Hi PeacefulWmn9, Where we live now there are no school uniforms they dress as they wish this only applies to the public schools though. One or two private Colleges make the children wear School Uniform although there is no strict dress code either. Not the same when we were at School and you had to wear the School Uniform just so. Not one thing out of place. If you broke the dress code you were sent home from School and you had to go back wearing the correct uniform. Dress code was School Uniform only, no earrings, no rings no incorrect hairstyles, no other shoes except school shoes and no stockings except the School Ones. Dress code was included for the Blazer which had to have a School Badge on it and the Beret you had to fasten it on your hair with hairclips. The beret also had to wear the School Emblem as well. Dress code again you were sent home if you came to School unduly dirty or untidy. Our School Uniform made us all equal as there was a lot of poverty then so I would say it was pretty fair rules about the dress code and all that. You always had a lot of girls trying to get into School wearing earrings and things and makeup and they were punished sent home to wash it all off and then they had to come back and make up for lost time. This kind of dress code using School Uniforms is great but not taken to extremes like ours often was. This also applied to the boys as well. [lovinangelsinstead21]
Oh yes, I loved reading Jane Eyre! I do know that almost all of us, as teens especially, express our ways or rebel in some form when we are not in school. It is part of discovery our individuality! We didn't have uniforms, but we did have a dress code where all the girls must wear skirts or dresses, so once home, we quickly changed into our jeans and favorite tops, etc...whatever happened to be "in." [PeacefulWmn9]

It is always better to have school uniforms during school days as it will be crucial growing day for any of the indiviuals in the world.During college days there is no need to have uniform. As college days are the most beautiful days in th world [AJAntony]
happy Hi AJ. I very much agree with you. I hope the US begins to follow this habit of uniforms. But as you said, college days are some of the most memorable in life, and by then, the hope is that one has matured past all the competive ways that go with "no dress code" in the younger school years. Have a beautiful weekend, and thank you for expressing your opinion here. Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

It is better to have uniforms either in school or offices because there is equality in dress and save you more money in buying more clothes. And you are right, using uniform you cannot identify who are rich and poor. [olepmis]
happy Hi there, Olepmis :) I hope your day has gone well. I think you are right in that uniforms do not allow for attaching social stigmas based on finances to students, and I can see that they would indeed save money in the long run for parents. It just seems they put the students on a more equal footing and are more conducive to keeping the focus on learning. Thank you for sharing your voice here. Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

If you would have asked me this question when I was a teenager years and years ago I would have been against the uniform issue. We had a dress code that wasn't really strict on what to wear it just covered the basic common sense issues like skirts not too short, no tank tops or tube tops, appropriate shoes, no shorts and things like that. My kids schools have pretty much the same thing although I've noticed some kids can break those rules while others can not. It was that way when I was a kid as well. Anyway, after being out in the work force I've become more accustomed to the idea of uniforms or even a very strict dress code. Just about every job I've had has had some kind of dress standards. From only certain color and type of slacks and tops to professional looking attire. One Job I wasn't allowed to wear tennis shoes or socks. It had to be casual or dress shoes and nylons. So I guess what I'm saying is that the kids might as well get to use to it because we're told how to dress for more than just school. I think the nice thing about wearing a uniform is that if it's still clean you can wear it more than one day and nobody would know. Unlike regular clothes. [jimntam]
happy Hello there to you :) It is interesting how we change our opinions as we mature, yes? Your dress code when you were in school sounds very much like the one I had to follow, and though a code still exists, it does seem to become more and more relaxed with time. And you make a great point. Nearly every single place of work DOES have some kind of dress code that each employee must follow. Our children should get a bit used to that, since that is just how it is in the "grown-up" world. Even as adults, we have rules to follow! Thank you so much for participating in this discussion, and have a nice night. Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

Most schools in my area wear uniforms. It is neat and gives the student an identity. It is also a marketing tool for schools especially those schools that perform well. Most schools have their logos on their jumpers or blaizers. I think schools should wear uniform. It helps to identify students in large. crowds. [in4net6rix]
happy Hello there :) I think the way it is done in your area is good, and I hope that soon becomes so in my own area. Uniforms allow a child to identify with their particular school, and they dress alike, so no stigmas or bullying about income of the family! I think that is a plus. I certainly appreciate your input. Have a beautiful weekend. Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

e had a dress code for boys and girls while at school.it was dark blue trousers for boys upto eighth grade. later on it became dark blue pants. similarly it was dark blue shorts for girls upto the eighth grade. it became dark blue pyjamas after that. but we had white coloured shirts throughout. i bought good quality white shirts and pants while at school. mainly there was no religious distinction about wearing any dress. but the sikhs wore blue turban.even muslim girls with normal dress attended classes. we treated them as equals. [golvine]
happy Hello Golvine. I think it is wonderful that you treated all as equals. It is a good start for children when school goes well and nice relationships and self-esteem are established at a young age. Thank you for sharing your experience.happy Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

I wouldn't have such a big problem with uniforms (especially at private schools) if they didn't cost so bleedin' much!! Some students on scholarship (like myself) are only at these schools by the grace of someone else's generosity and seriously should not be expected to fork over $100 for a blazer, $50 for a regulation boater not to mention skirts, shirts, ties, shoes and stockings. [elenyae]
happy Hello Elenyae. Whoa! That is a lot of money. I think all school clothes cost a lot, but at least if a uniform is not required, one can shop thrift stores, etc. Ack!shocked Best wishes and a happy day to you. Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

hi Karen, we were always allowed to dress as we wished, in the girls school I attended till I was 16 and then in that mixed school I attended from 16 to 19. It was funny to see the different dress styles then, and I think its great. Everyone can choose what he or she finds best and develop an unique style. Granted, I never had fashionable clothes as my mother is a very strongly individualistic person who made sure that I dont run around in the same clothes style others have and I was the dartboard of the class in my high school times till 16 for the clothes I had to wear. But till this day I dont give a hoot as to what is in fashion or out of fashion. I wear what I like and if I had children they would also wear what they like. [book1962]
happy I think most of us, by a certain age in our adult years, quit following any fashion mores but what WE like, and that is a very freeing way to finally become. Karen [PeacefulWmn9]

I believe uniforms are better than a special dress code. That way parents and kids don't have to stress about buying particular clothing. They can just buy what is provided by the school bookstore. It saves a lot of time and money. [AKMEDIA2]
happy Hello Akmedia. You're right...it takes a lot of guesswork out of the whole concept of shopping for back to school clothes and for your child trying to keep up with the latest and most expensive trends! Thank you for your input Karen [PeacefulWmn9]
