We have when we was younger. I know that this may sound disgusting.doh When we did not have liquid detergent, we would use washing powder. It could be Surf or Tide. I know now, that this was never safe to do. But we had no choice but to. In order for our dishes to become clean we had to use washing powder. I use liquid only to wash my dishes in. This is just something that I did when I was younger. We were told to do this. Have you ever washed your dishes with washing powder before?

No but I did the opposit before. I tried to wash my laundry with the liquid laundry detergent once. It was the middle of the winter and driving conditions were not safe and I was out of laundry detergent, so I tried using dish soap in the washer. Huge mistake. There were bubbles brimming over the sides of my washing machine and dripping on the floor, at least the floor got a good washing too, but from what I have read I was lucky I did not break my washer when I did that. [ladym33]
I put fairy liquid in the automatic once, and the bubbles were unreal, lol Took about 2 days to get rid of them all. The floor got soaked right enough. Fairy sure does last longer!!! [vonmac]
hi cream97 yes just once but it made me think that this is not really such a great idea, as you do not know if any of the residue or chemicals might stay on the dishes , so did not do it again. I have tried to wash clothes with dove dish soap but it did not really do a great cleaning job o n the clothes unfortunately, so back to real dish soap and real detergent for laundry. [Hatley]
Someone tole my husband that he could try using Dawn detergent on our clothing to wash them. He used it and it worked well on our clothes, it left it smelling good. I was so surprised. Dawn is $1.00 and I know what to use when I am running low on money.happy [cream97]
hello cream, Yes,(ahaha),but i dilute with it water,i put the washing powder to an empty dish washing liquid container and dilute with water. I shake it to dissolve the powder and my youngest son will play the bubbleslol. My daughter always get annoyed everytime we run out of dish washing liquid, that is why she always keep on monitored that we had stock, for she hated using the washing powder. nice topic dearhappy [jaiho2009]
Have you ever washed your dishes with washing powder before? Yes, I have done that as well and I think I spent more time trying to rinse all the wee bits of powder off the cutlery and the plates. I thought it left the plates more slippy than normal. So now I always make sure I have a spare bottle of washing up liquid [vonmac]
Hi there Cream. Well we used washing powder a few years back - i would say more then 5, as we had no idea how bad it is, and nowadays we only use liquid type for dishes. My grandmother still uses powder even now though (i don't remember the name but i know it was a great international scandal about it's negative effects a few years back). PS: i had to read the discussion twice, as you posted it in the washing clothes interest :P [elitess]
I dont think it is disgusting at all .As a matter of fact I still was my plates with soap powder and I think it gives my plates a pretty good clean .I dont see any problem with it.As a matter of fact I think it gives a better wash than liquid soap [ronnyb]
I have never done it personally, and, as far as I have observed, neither has my wife. When I was a child growing up in the North of England some 50 odd years ago, however, I saw both my parents do this on occasions. Money was very tight, and this was the economical way to do things at the time. How effective it was, I have no idea, but it cannot have been so deadly as both my sister and I later ate off the crockery that had been cleaned that way, and we are both still around to tell the tale. [astonysh]
I do it when i run out of the dishwashing liquid and sometimes even the hard soap i use it. i make sure i throughly clean the dishes making sure no soap residues are left. [neelianoscet]
no but i've used comet on hopelessly greasy pans. i rewashed it in regular soap, but that was the only way to get that grease off. [scarlet_woman]
Comet works effectively in removing hard grease stains, I admit. I have used this to clean out my tub. [cream97]
I've never washed my dishes with washing powder before, but I've done the opposite, I've had to use dishwashing liquid to wash clothes because I was out of washing powder, sometimes you have to do what you have to do, you can't help it. [walijo2008]
I have never used washing powder to wash dishes. I always use liquid to wash our dishes. It is little wired to think to wash dishes with washing powder. But still in some countries they do use washing powder to wash dishes. [sweetlady10]
I have never used powdered soap/detergent or any kind on dishes. I'm so used to liquid soap, I think it'd be too weird. >w< I don't think I'd ever wash my dishes with laundry soap, even if I didn't have a choice- the smell would just be too unappetizing for things I use to eat with. [olisaur]
Sometimes we have to do what we have to do and washing detergent is just that, washing detergent. I haven't done that but I've done the other way around meaning, I've used dish detergent to wash my clothes in the washing machine because I ran out of clothes detergent. It worked just fine and my clothes came out nice and clean. [CatsandDogs]
Hello cream. I understand it when you talk about it because in those days when we did not have such good stuff to use, we would use something else instead and I think that it is very normal to use something as a substitute, especially in those years without such. Now we use liquid detergent instead, which is more convenient and available. Take care, friend. [williamjisir]
Hi, some years back nearly twenty years there were no bars or liquids only powders were used. But when even powders were not there then also people used some powder to clean utensils and they were also not harming and were herbal.Nirma is a washing powder used for utensils but now we hear it rare.Bars like exo have come .recently we had liquids.but these are costlier. [umabharti]
No never.I have never done this.I always use only the dish wash bar or liquid for the purpose.Else sometimes a lime piece. But I think washing dishes using a clothes washing powder may not be a right way at all.Who knows what chemicals are used in it.May be they use chemicals that are appropriate only for usage on clothes and not for dish washing. [nikhil_sun]
No washing powder is used in my family to wash dishes. My mom even me use vim bar to wash. Years ago, when these were not available, My mom used ash to clean dishes. Awkward nah. But True. [shibham]
I guess it was before my time. Because all my life I have been washing dishes with liquid dishwashing soap or detergent. It would be really tough for me to wash the dishes with powder because I know I will wind up with lumps of powder on stuff. I don't like how the laundry detergent powder sometimes doesn't dissolve all the way and leave lumps. [nijolechu]
Yes, before we actually use detergent bars when washing dishes and sometimes powdered detergent if we ran out of bars or dishwashing liquid. but now, we make sure that we have a stock of dishwashing liquid at home. =) [Mebgem]
I haven't done that but I have used dishwahing stuff to do my clothes before..lol. When I was little I remember my grandmother washing my hair with it too because we were out of shampoo and I had to go to school. [JenInTN]
No I haven't and I imagine that you would have to make an effort to rinse the dishes very well to get all the soap off of them because of the nature of the detergent. I'm glad to hear that you and your family never got sick because of it. Purrs, Catwoman=^..^= & Mija [kellyjeanne]
of course i do. believe it or not we even use soap bar in washing our dishes here. [ralphbrian]
i have never do like that,if i wash my dshes with washing powder before,i think that i disgust and could not eat diet.because i know that the chemical compisitoin is large in washing powder,it effect human's health.so i hope to use other way to clean my dishes.for example hot water or washing sperm [bingchen]
Wow, i remember back then i used to but now, it's all about the liquid soap. it's much harder to wash dishes with the powder because sometimes it doesn't dissolve all the way so you take up more time tossing and turning the dish to get all the stuff off. So just a tip, use liquid soap next time. [skyhawk3]
Hi, Cream! Yes, we would use the washing powder for a few times only just in case we've run out the liquid detergent on that particular day. Normally, we would mix it with lime or calamansi juices to get more satisfying cleaning result. I don't think it's disgusting at all. It might be not safe due to certain chemical for a long term usage, but it's quite handy when we need it urgently. wink [corrycrystal]
I think I did when I was young too. As kids, we had to take turns doing the dishes, and I thik I could remember doing it with powdered soap. But I do remember diluting it with water as it was hard to rinse if we didn't. Funny, how we did things when we were young. And we seem to forget when we learn other conveniences in life.happy [bounce58]
I have never done that but I think as long as the dishes are rinsed very well there is not problem. I have several gallons of a mild shampoo and I use that as hand soap and use it for body wash as well and sometimes use it to wash some under garmets. It seems much gentler and does not dry out my skin as much. [muscles4me]
I would use washing powder only for pots which are black with soot. It makes the pots shine. However, for dishes, using liquid detergent is enough for me as it is easier on the hands compared to using powder. [whyaskq]
Only in the dishwasher, ie Cascade. But I guess if I didn't have any liquid or any possibility of getting any soon, I might used powder, or bar soap, or whatever I could get hold of. I have, however, occasionally used liquid hand washing soap for dishes when we were out of dishwashing liquid. [dawnald]
I have had to do that in the past ,just make sure your rinse the dishes well or it can taste of powder it can cut down on extra expense ,also it is good for floor washing just don't put to much in the water or it will bubble everywhere.I also use washing powder to soak teaspoons if they get tea stained. [suzzy3]
Hi Cream No I have never done this before I rather wash the Dishe in just hot water if I should run out of Washing up Liquid which I normally don't lol as I always buy 2 to make sure I do not run out [gabs8513]
When we go out of station or stay in hospital for family member's sickness, we use detergent powder for washing spoons, plates and glasses. Since it is temporary, I feel it is ok for convenience's sake. [Buchi_bulla]
yes......for a couple of times, My hubby has given detergent powder to my maid servant, when she asked for. This is out of confusion, he did it. But, its never safe to use detergent powder instead of dish washing poswer. Its too dangerous, not hygiene to the kids. These utensils may cause ill effect on health, because strong chemicals are used in the powder. [bhagvadgita]
